Hire or DIY? Sump Pump Installation

When it comes to home repairs there is always a question for many couples about whether they should hire someone to do the home repairs they are looking to do or should they try to do it themselves. This is a conversation that is not always on the same page between couples. However, in the end there is a decision is made. So, when it comes to sump pump installation, which should it be, DIY or hire a professional company?

The Case for DIY

When making a case to install the pump sump yourself there is going to be the obvious argument of money saved. However, do not just assume that will be the case. It is important to go through the numbers and consider the fact that there are going to be some mistakes and some redo’s in most cases. This all cost extra money to make it happen and it may ne more than you would think. Be overly conservative in your estimation of the costs savings when it comes to DIY over a professional service. Another thing that can make a case for the DIY enthusiast to do their own sump pump installation is the fact that installing it themselves, a home owner will better understand how it works and may be able to handle any issues in the future because they understand the mechanics of how it works and can diagnose the trouble.

The Case for Professional Installation

Of course, on the other side of the coin is having someone come in and install the sump pump professionally. The case for this is going to the opposite of all the negatives of a DIY. Because professionals do this all the time they know what they are doing and the job will be done much faster. In addition, they will be able to diagnose any potential issues during the installation and account for them. In addition, they will be able to do the job with less mess than someone who is just learning what needs to be done. Experience counts for a lot when it comes to the mess and the speed with which a job is done.

Making the Decision

When it comes to make the decision on whether you are going to attempt a DYI sump pump installation or have it done professionally you may want to take the time to really consider just how much you really will save doing it yourself. A good rule of thumb is to at least double the estimated cost in a DYI situation and then see if it is half the cost to have a professional do it. If this is the case it may be worth doing it, otherwise it may be wiser to hire a professional company to do the work. Having a professional company come in an do the work is easier, faster and warrantied. There is a lot to say for the ability to have something fixed for free should something go wrong or break prematurely.
