Useful Tips On Installing Window Blinds

The most important factor that you should keep in mind is to have perfectly aligned brackets. That means the brackets should be at the same height and distance from the window, as well the wall.  You can simply achieve this by using a measure tape and there is no need for a level.

You should not be surprised to learn that windows and doors of most houses are not at perfect level, and shouldn’t matter really for the present job. Good fitting certainly means that ultimately the blinds should remain parallel to the window to make a nice appearance. It means that if there is slight error in the leveling of the window, you ignore that and maintain the brackets at the same distance from edge of the window to ensure that they remain parallel to the window that might not be perfectly leveled. It’s not difficult to visualize the appearance of brackets or blackout blinds that are not parallel to the window. That doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to be leveled.

Drilling the pilot holes

Having finalized the positioning of the bracket, you should mark the location. Making a mark is important as all the holes are pre-drilled and marks ensure that you don’t lose track of the locations. Pre-drilling means making a small hole at the marked po

sition to ensures that the screw will go to the exactly required point. It further avoids any chance of splitting of wood.

Marking the location of screw is very simple. Take a pencil or a felt-tip pen, and just run it inside the hole thru which the screw needs to pass. Mark all the required holes in the same manner. Now, using a hand drill or an electric drill, make a hole at the exact centre of the marked point. You need to ensure that the length of the hole at least equals the length of the screw you are going to use.

Generally, a bracket is supported on four screws. It will be better if you drill only two holes on each of the brackets and make a preliminary assessment of alignment being perfect. While you test the brackets, don’t put the full weight of the blinds on the brackets. Once you have satisfied yourself with the alignment, you can drill the balance of holes and attach the head rail as per specifications and instructions of the manufacturer.
